Why Online Church won't work in the Long run.
People were designed to meet with each other, to shake hands, and to break bread. Of course with our new social distancing rules we won't be able to do this until this virus passes. Churches have gotten involved with online streaming services even before this crisis, but putting our crisis aside right now and make believing we have gotten through it, I want to talk about why church should limit it's use of technology. Of course technology can enhance our lives, but we are talking about God here. God doesn't need technology like us humans because he is Omniscient, Omnipresent, and Omnipotent. He doesn't need to enhance himself like the way we do, so you ask me "is God against technology in church?"
To answer this question I need to ask you a question. How do you communicate with a divine Being? Prayer right? Do you need some kind of intermediate device to communicate with God? The answer is no. If God is here right now in front of me, I can talk to Him face to face, like I am talking to a friend. God created church to be a visible witness of his Son Jesus, so the next question you want to ask me is does God care if we gather in person, or virtually? Obviously the answer is that He doesn't need us, but He chose to save a people from humanity, and when we are able He wants us to meet face to face, or in person. (Crisis aside) Human beings are fickle people and when we start to do the same things over and over, we form a habit. There might be people who lead us in our churches who might want to make virtual church the new norm, even after this crisis.
So why am I concerned? I'm concerned because we might be trying to manufacture a fake presence of God. Our virtual churches could become a pseudoscience where we create a false experience, and a false faith in the real Living God, and that would be considered idolatry. Doing church the right way doesn't involve facilitating a phoney presence of the Lord, and that is the danger of virtual church! God doesn't live in a computer, and neither do we! His church was intended to be a three dimensional representation and witness of Jesus Christ's body, or his invisible presence on earth. By making Christ's body virtual, you are committing a blasphemy. Crisis can cause us to look at things differently, but after the crisis we should try to return to what God intended His church to be. We have to be very careful we are not attempting to create our own God, or do church our way! God gives us the ability to think and to create, but we mustn't try to control God, or put Him in a box, or a computer! (That could be very dangerous!) This is Mike!
