Human Goodness.
Human goodness isn't the path to peace. We all like to think of ourselves as good people, but the way we were born into this world disqualifies us for Heaven. There is nothing good in our natures even after we repent, we need to understand that humans are born sinful and we die sinful, other than the Grace of God, there is nothing in our natures that can redeem us. Those who make it to Heaven do so not because they were saints, relying on good works, they made it there because of the Grace of God.
The reason why he rejects human goodness is because by our human natures we are incredibly unholy to God. To rely on your own sanctity only will bring God's further judgement to you. Jesus was the only sinless person, and we are saved by him and his sacrifice. Our belief in this alone gives us his righteousness, but the moment we think we are holy in our own natures is a mistake. We can trust God and his goodness. I'm not saying humans can't try to be good, or try to be holy, but it is a mistake to think that you can earn your own ticket to Heaven.
When we think that we earned our way to God, humans start to become prideful and we believe we are owed something from God. The bible tells us the wages of sin is death, so we believe we have to do something to add to God's plan. We also believe that we are owed a good life, as a reward for good things that we do, and part of that is true. We reap what we sow, so be careful what kind of seeds you are sowing. Part of resisting sin, means that we are open to the grace of God! God doesn't want us living in sin, but he also doesn't want humans to take the credit for their own holiness. Why? It produces pride, and eventually condemns us, when we chose to take Glory from God.
He doesn't have to save anyone, but he still chooses to show his mercy despite us. This is Mike.
