26 For if we sin wilfully after that we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins, 27 But a certain fearful looking for of judgment and fiery indignation, which shall devour the adversaries. 28 He that despised Moses’ law died without mercy under two or three witnesses: 29 Of how much sorer punishment, suppose ye, shall he be thought worthy, who hath trodden under foot the Son of God, and hath counted the blood of the covenant, wherewith he was sanctified, an unholy thing, and hath done despite unto the Spirit of grace? 30 For we know him that hath said, Vengeance belongeth unto me, I will recompense, saith the Lord. And again, The Lord shall judge his people. 31 It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.

Sin is taken very seriously in the bible and it is taken very seriously in the ongoing history of the church. To get this wrong is to fail to understand the message of the bible. The Old and New Testaments are all about making covering or atonement for sin. The Law and the Sacrifices in the Old Testament covered and atoned for sin, and Jesus demonstrated full atonement in the New Testament. We are all experts in sin, because we do it everyday. Some repent and some just go on like nothing happened. This is what I think these verses are saying in the book of Hebrews. If we go on sinning without repentance after we have received a full knowledge of God's truth, we make the sacrifice of Jesus ineffective for us permanently.
It sounds like a serious judgement on those who do this by God, but in my opinion this reflects the nature of a Holy God, and how seriously He takes our sins. Sin enslaves people to act in a way that offends God. The bible teaches that we all sin, and that no one is righteous but God. However God offers man justice in sending His Son to die for our sins, and to give us the ability to love him in return. When we fail to love God and our neighbour as God intended, we simply sin. Jesus wants people to be free, and when we choose to continue in our sins (lack of love and forgiveness) we will die without mercy v. 28,. If we choose to live our lives in sin, which is lovelessness we forfeit the grace of God, v. 29. To live in sin means that I am no longer living my life in God's grace, and I am choosing to reject the Saviour's sacrifice by not showing mercy. This is Mike.
